ACT’S QUALITY

Each ACT product is unparalleled in strength, durability and materials. ACT products combine all the features needed in a performance clutch or flywheel with many different combinations to choose from. Materials used from design to production provide the platform for a solid engineered part. ACT provides quality that lasts, materials that work and processes that perform to ensure calculated results. Simple yet advanced.

ACT’S PERFORMANCE

ACT designs each part for a high standard of performance. There are no shortcuts taken on the ACT road. Every design has been evaluated for benefits and tradeoffs. Clamp load, friction, pedal feel, working range and other characteristics are carefully tested and assessed. ACT offers the best combination to achieve the maximum performance. No gimmicks or misleading advertisements – just plain and simple engineering and calculated results.

ACT’S TECHNOLOGY

Finite Element Analysis
ACT uses powerful Finite Element Analysis (FEA) computer software to test and evaluate products in a virtual environment. The FEA software accompanies the latest CAD and 3D solid modeling software used by ACT’s research and development department so that numerous design alternatives can be considered long before coming to market with a new product. ACT’s FEA software mechanical stress, heat transfer, thermal stress, vibration and buckling analysis under virtually any load condition which can help identify potential problems in a particular design.

Custom Data Recording Press
ACT uses a computer operated data recording press to cycle, test and record pressure plate clamp load, working range, release load and release travel. Each pressure plate is load tested and cycled to ensure parts meet ACT’s strict quality standards. This special equipment makes testing accurate, efficient, and thorough so both existing parts and prototype designs can be quickly evaluated. This equipment also allows ACT to create custom setups for customers and give them a dyno sheet for that exact assembly.

Laboratory Testing
Utilizing the latest in laboratory testing, ACT continues to experiment with different friction materials and design alternatives for future product development. Friction material tests help ACT to evaluate coefficient of friction, fade, wear, and recovery under different load, speed and temperature conditions. Laboratory burst testing and material testing is performed on parts for SFI certification on a scheduled basis and regularly performed on new parts.

ACT Clutch

After spending long hours and thousands of dollars building that high powered engine, you need a quality clutch that can properly transfer that power into motion. Count on ACT clutches for quality, performance and affordability.

ACT recognizes that every driver and engine set-up is unique, so a variety of complete clutch kits and components are offered to match virtually any situation. ACT’s complete clutch kits include a pressure plate, disc, release bearing, and (in most cases) a pilot bearing and alignment tool. The kit guide on the next page will help you select the ACT kit that best fits your needs. The following pages include ACT clutch kits and components listed by application. Torque capacities are provided for every clutch combination. When a specific flywheel is required for an ACT Clutch, it will be designated in the chart for your convenience.

Consider carefully which clutch is right for your car. First you need a clutch that will hold all the power, but not too excessive. For street use, you also need a long lasting clutch that has a positive feel, smooth engagement and quiet operation. For racing, you need a tough clutch that will enable quick shifts and hard slips all the way to the finish line.

ACT Pressure Plate Key Features

  • ACT pressure plates are available in a variety of designs, including all factory push, pull, crimp and rivet designs.
  • ACT pressure plates feature a special, single-diaphragm design to dramatically increase clamp load without the adverse effects of double-diaphragm type clutches.
  • Effective diaphragm designs are used to increase clamp load, reduce deflection and maximize clutch life. All diaphragms endure an exclusive four-stage, heat-treating process for unparalleled performance.
  • All castings are CNC-machined for greater consistency and precision.
  • Cover stampings are sometimes reinforced by ACT to reduce flex and improve the efficiency and feel of the pressure plate.
  • Stronger drive straps and rivets are used when needed to strengthen the pressure plate and prevent breakage.
  • All ACT pressure plates are dynamically computer balanced for smooth operation at high RPM.
  • A load test for every pressure plate is performed on a special computerized testing press for quality assurance. This same machine also assists in designing new products and evaluating parts that are in for service.
  • Proper release travel, clamp load, pedal effort and working range are analyzed using specialized testing equipment and software.
  • Most ACT pressure plates are certified as meeting SFI Specification 1.1 and are legal for competition in all racing organizations where SFI certification is required.
Heavy Duty

- Most popular
- Clamp load increase of 20 to 50 percent
- Pedal feels stock to moderate
- Most meet SFI Spec. 1.1 to ensure safety

Xtreme

- Clamp load increase of 50 to 120 percent
- Pedal feels moderate to stiff
- All meet SFI Spec. 1.1 to ensure safety

ACT Performance Street Disc Key Features

  • ACT carefully selects the right amount of cushioning between the linings to allow for good engagement characteristics without sacrificing performance.
  • ACT Performance Street discs feature premium friction material. With this material, the disc achieves better heat tolerance and faster recovery from overheating.
  • Carefully broached splines to ensure exact fit onto the transmission input shaft for long spline life and better clutch release.
  • Precision stampings for disc components are manufactured using dedicated tooling. This allows ACT to offer the highest in quality and consistency.
  • Top grade rivets are used to securely fasten the part together. Rivet design and materials are carefully selected for maximum strength.
  • ACT spring retainers feature wraparound spring windows that provide support and reduce stress concentrations, which are common causes for failure. These spring retainers are offered on most ACT Modified and Performance Street discs.
  • Heavy duty torsional dampening springs are stronger in most cases than standard springs and are provided in the best sizes and spring rates to suit the application. Quiet operation is ensured from original equipment (OE) quality torsional dampeners.
  • Spring windows on most ACT street discs are heat-treated to resist wear, increase strength and reduce the chance of springs “popping” out.
  • Most ACT spring-centered assemblies use bushings and cone springs, similar to factory clutch discs. This creates frictional dampening that improves clutch life and reduces noise.
  • ACT rigid-hub discs are of minimal weight for faster shifts, resulting in less stress on synchronizers, and provide race-proven performance with street manageability.
  • Warning: Gear noise may occur due to the absence of torsional dampening springs, or with stiffer dampening springs.
  • All Modified, Performance and many standard replacement discs are certified as meeting SFI Specification 1.1 and are legal in all racing organizations that require SFI certification.
